One species, two sides of a mountain range
Working together across the species’ entire range.
CRARC coordinated a range-wide survey for pathogens in Pyrenean brook newt populations, Calotriton asper, on both the Spanish and French sides of the Pyrenees.
The work drew on the TULIP, INTERREG POCTEFA ECTOPYR and LIFE+ LIMNOPIRINEUS projects, bringing together teams, funding and expertise from both sides of the mountain range.
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis was detected in some populations, although observed prevalence was low. The results were published in Herpetological Review.
Pathogens do not recognise borders; disease surveillance should not stop at them either.
