Preparing before a crisis

A coordinated European response to protect salamanders and newts.

Following a commission from the European Commission and several years of work, the team helped develop a continent-wide action plan for Bsal.

The document brings together the in situ and ex situ measures required to reduce the fungus’s impact in the wild. It includes a risk assessment for European species and subspecies and a review of the relevant legislation.

The strategy distinguishes between decisions required before, during and after an introduction. It also proposes species-specific measures based on susceptibility, persistence and recognised conservation units.

Shared preparedness makes a rapid response possible when a new outbreak is detected.

The plan turns scientific evidence into coordinated protocols for public authorities, conservation centres and professional networks.
